Frederick Augusto Chubbic was born on 19 March 1813 in Plymouth Co., MA, the third of twelve children born to Benjamin and Bathsheba (Harvey) Chubbic. Benjamin moved his young family to North Strabane township, Washington Co., PA some time about 1816-1817 where they settled and farmed.

Frederick first married Letitia "Lettie" Lutton about 1835 in Washington Co., PA. Lettie was the eldest of five known children born to James and Sarah (Piper) Lutton. She was born about 1814 in North Strabane township, Washington Co., PA on the farm where her father had settled some time about 1811 after coming to the area as a young man from Cecil Co., MD. The Lutton family farm was situated next to the land where the Chubbics settled and both families were members of the Chartiers Hill Presbyterian church. Some time during their marriage, Lettie and Frederick moved to Hopewell township where it is presumed they farmed. It was there that Lettie died at the age of thirty-three on 14 February 1847, six months after giving birth to her youngest child. She is buried in the Upper Buffalo Presbyterian church cemetery in Hopewell township.

Lettie and Frederick had the following children:

  1. James Chubbic
  2. Isabelle "Belle" Chubbic
  3. Robert L. "Bob" Chubbic
  4. Sarah Ann Chubbic
  5. Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" Chubbic
The youngest child, Elizabeth, who was an infant when her mother died, was taken in and raised by her maternal grandmother, Sarah Lutton. The other children remained with their father.

Frederick next married Mrs. Martha Dunkel sometime about 1847 in Hopewell township, Washington Co., PA. who came to the marriage with three children of her own from her one, and perhaps two, previous marriages: Nancy Dunkel b. about 1841, Thomas Dunkel b. about 1843, and John Riley b. about 1846. It is not known for sure if John Riley was Martha's adopted son or a son from a short-lived marriage to a man named Riley. Martha was born 1 April 1813 in PA and died 20 December 1887 in Douglas township, Polk Co., IA where she is buried at Greenwood cemetery.

Frederick and Martha went on to have at least three children: Lettie Chubbic b. about 1848, Benjamin Chubbic b. 7 September 1850, and Mary Margaret Chubbic b. 9 November 1852. Some time about 1865, just after the Civil War, the family "sojourned in the south", reportedly stopping for a time in Nashville, Tennessee, and finally settling on a farm in Douglas township, Polk Co., IA by 1870. Frederick was said to have farmed some land in Jewell Co., KS between 1882 and 1890, returning to Polk Co., IA at that time, but no records have been found so far to confirm this.

Frederick married a third time to Virginia Parmenter in Polk Co., IA on 8 July 1889. He died on 14 March 1893 in Bondurant, Polk Co., IA. According to his descendants, he died from injuries sustained in a fall from the train on which he was returning to Iowa from visiting relatives in California. His last will and testament was probated in Polk Co., IA on 28 April 1892 and his sister Belle McGlaughlin was appointed administrator. Frederick is buried at Greenwood cemetery in Douglas township, Polk Co., Iowa.

Second Generation

1. James CHUBBIC was born about 1836 in North Strabane township, Washington Co., PA. Very little is known of James. While he was living with his father in 1850 at the age of thirteen, he is not listed with the family in the 1860 census when he would have been about twenty-three years old and no other census record has been uncovered for him that year.

In 1870, there is a census record for a James H. Chubbic living in Peters township, Washington Co., PA. Peters township is adjacent to North Strabane township where the Chubbic clan was centered. This James lists his age as thirty-five years old. He is married to a Violet, age 30, whose parents were of foreign birth, and has children named Eliza P., age 5, and Ella M., age 6 months. This family has not been located in subsequent census years. As far as we know to date, this James does not fit into any of the other Chubbic families living in the area at the time leaving the possibility open that he is the son of Lettie Lutton and Frederick Chubbic.

3. Isabelle "Belle" Chubbic was born about 1839 in North Strabane township, Washington Co., PA and raised in Hopewell township. She married Andrew H. McLaughlin about 1858. Andrew was born in West Virginia, possibly near Wheeling in Ohio Co., where he and Belle settled prior to the Civil War and where three of their children were born. (Note that Hopewell township shares its western border with the state of West Virginia.) Belle and Andrew had the following children:

Andrew served in the Civil War as a sergeant with Co. B, 187th West Virginia Infantry according to the cemetery records of the Upper Buffalo Presbyterian church cemetery, where he is buried. However, no dates of birth or death are given. West Virginia Civil War records note that Co. B, 1st WV Inf. mustered in in October 1861 and a Sgt. Andrew McLaughlin mustered out of that Company with a disability on 26 November 1864. It seems that some time after 1864 and before mid-1870, Andrew and Belle moved their young family from West Virginia to Hopewell township, Washington Co., PA where Belle's father, Frederick Chubbic, was living. Their daughter Mary was born there. In the 1870 census for that township, Belle is listed as a widow with four small children.

In the spring of 1900, Belle moved with her son John's family to Kalispell, Flathead Co., MT. Belle died in Kalispell on 8 May 1915 at the age of seventy-six. She had been living with her single son, Fred, at 620 8th Ave. W., next door to her son John and his family. As late as 1980, her house was still occupied. Belle is buried at Conrad Memorial cemetery in Kalispell.

Note two interesting facts about Belle. First, in 1910, Belle reports to the census taker that she had borne five children of which three were still living, but we only know of four births from the records. Second, some time over Belle's lifetime, the spelling of her married name began to be recorded as McGlaughlin, with the added "G".

4. Robert "Bob" L. Chubbic was born about 1841 in Washington Co., PA, either in North Strabane or Hopewell township. Between 1865 and 1870, he traveled with his father to Polk Co., IA where he married Marelda A. Monarch on 6 December 1871. Marleda was born on 13 September 1844 and she died in Douglas township, Polk Co., IA on 2 June 1898. She is buried at Berwick Cemetery in Delaware township. Bob is last known to have lived in Clay township, Polk Co., IA in 1910 where he was farming. It is believed he moved to San Diego, California with his sons Earl and Arthur and died there.

Bob and Marelda had the following children:

In 1880, according to census records, Bob's niece, Letitia McLaughlin, who was sixteen years old, was living with the family. This fact, plus other family stories, confirm that Bob Chubbic's family and Belle McGlaughlin's family stayed in contact with each other throughout the years despite living great distances apart.

5. Sarah Ann Chubbic was born about 1844 in Washington Co., PA, either in North Strabane or Hopewell township. On 5 October 1864 she married Ezra Lyle Farrar, the youngest of five children born to Andrew and Eliza (Buchanan) Farrar of Buffalo Village, Hopewell township, Washington Co., PA. Ezra was born 16 April 1842 in Cumberland, Guernsey Co., OH.

Sarah and Ezra lived for a short time in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA where their second child was born, but later returned to Hopewell township. Sarah died 14 March 1869 at the age of twenty-five and is buried in Hopewell township, Washington Co., PA. They had two sons:

On 11 May 1870 Ezra married a second time to Mary Jane Denning, who was born in 1850 in Washington Co., PA. In the spring of 1882, Ezra and Mary Jane moved to LeClede, Linn Co., MO where they settled and raised Sarah's two sons. In addition, they had twelve Farrar children of their own within fifteen years: Charles M., Julia V., Andrew H., Emma B., Eliza M., Robert E., Mary J., George L., Fannie A., Joseph F., Marcus W., and John A. Ezra died in LeClede on 9 April 1912 at the age of seventy.

6. Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" Chubbic was born on 2 August 1846 in Washington Co., PA, probably in Hopewell township. With her mother's death in March 1847, she was given over to her maternal grandmother, Sarah (Piper) Lutton to raise. She was brought up on the Luttom farm in North Strabane township, Washington Co., PA.

About 1868, Lizzie married Samuel A. White, one of eight children born to James and Isabella (May) White of Washington Co. Samuel was born in September 1837 in Pennsylvania and died 12 October 1908 in Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA. He is buried at Oak Springs cemetery in Canonsburg.

The couple lived in Ohio for some time early in their marriage where their eldest child was born. By 1880 the family had settled in Canonsburg where they remained and where Samuel worked as a livery stable keeper and later as a day laborer. Lizzie died on 19 June 1913 in Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA and is buried with her husband in Oak Springs cemetery. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church in Canonsburg.

Lizzie and Samuel had the following children:
