Notes

  While he was a young man, he moved to a farm near Bentleyville, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He worked Squire Bentley’s farm on shares. His death was caused when he was thrown from a load of hay. It was listed he was a Whig.

  3.  Thomas3 Ward  (Stephen2, James1) was born February 11, 1811 in Winchester Virginia, and died May 18, 1891 in Pennsylvania.  He married Elizabeth Williams, daughter of John Sr. and Mary Williams.

 

Notes

  In the 1880 Census, he is listed as living with his son Robert T. Ward. According to the 1880 Census Index,1 he was born in Pennsylvania

  According to the actual Census, he is listed as being born in Maryland. In a book on Washington County History, it list him as being born on a farm near Bentleyville, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The same book lists him as being born in Winchester, Virginia.

  He was educated in a log cabin subscription schools in his neighborhood. When he reached the age of 18, he moved to a farm in East Pike Run where he remained for 15 years. After locating on this farm, he married his wife Elizabeth.

  He was a republican and a member of the Methodist Church.

  In the 1860 Census, there is a Thomas Ward listed but there is no wife listed. One thing it has listed is a 2 females listed with the last name of Williams. Mary and Margaret. More and likely they are Thomas's mother and sister in law. They may be living there to take care of the kids who were young when their mother died.

Notes

  This part of the family lived in East Pike Run Township, Washington county, Pennsylvania. His occupation was that of a farmer.

  He owned an 80 acre farm of good land where he farmed. He was a republican and is a member of the Methodist Society.

  14.  Austin Robinson Ward5 Sr  (Robert T.4 Ward, Thomas3, Stephen2, James1) was born April 25, 1868 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died September 08, 1937 in Centerville, Washinton County, Pennsylvania.  He married Laura Bell Pepper November 03, 1891, daughter of William Pepper and Mariah Booth.

 

Notes

  According to the 1900 census, Austin Robert Ward had a (servant) living on the farm. This (Servant) could speak no English. Nor could he read or write. The (Servant) name was John Bearkheart. He was born in March of 1836 in Pennsylvania.

  Austin Robinson Ward and family lived on a farm in Denbo, Centerville Township. According to the census, many the people living around his farm worked on the locks or were farmers.

  It stated in Austin's will that he left a one story frame dwelling in on 2 lots in "South Brownsville" of Fayette County, Pennsylvania which was valued at $1,500. In Luzerne Township, he owned a vacant tract valued at $25.00. His farm in Denbo,

Washington County Pennsylvania had 100 acres, one, 2 story dwelling, a barn and other out buildings. The farm was valued at $4,000.

  Laura Bell Ward (Pepper) who was born November 19, 1867, Washington County, Pennsylvania. She is a daughter of William Pepper(s). She died September

20, 19632 in Centerville Township Washington County, Pennsylvania.

  She was 23 when she was married and was living in East Bethlehem.

  From her husband, she was given 2 mortgages. The first was of C. J. Williams that was dated February 27, 1927 in the amount of $1,500.00. This mortgage can be found in Mortgage Book 207, Page 189. At the time of her husbands death, there was a balance of $1,500 due.

  The second was of Ollie M Deems and M. Lucretia Deems. It was dated  October 1 1928 in the amount of $3,500. This one can be found in Mortgage Book 221, Page 385.

  27.  John Thomas Ward6 Sr  (Austin Robinson Ward5, Robert T.4 Ward, Thomas3, Stephen2, James1) was born November 15, 1903 in Centerville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died August 26, 1978 in Centerville, Washington County, Pennsylvania.  He married Anna Snock January 31, 1928 in Cumberland, Maryland, daughter of Joseph Snock and Mary Bijack.

 

Notes

  There is one story that was told me about my grandfather John Thomas Ward Sr. It seems that he made moon shine and sold it to the foreigners that lived around the farm. This semi makes sense to me.

  When I was much younger, I spent a weekend with my grandparents on their farm in Centerville. One day my grandfather told me how to make moonshine. He then told me how to make a still. At the time, I did not understand how he would know how to make a still. After I found out that he at one time made moonshine, the story he told made a lot of sense.

  John Thomas Ward Sr. was a coal miner for 10 years, he was also a farmer. His wife stated that he had a still and made moonshine. This moonshine he made, he sold to the emigrants that lived around him. He worked as a maintenance man at Brownsville Hospital from 1965 -- 1975. 

  When his father died, he and his brother Robert A. Ward was given real estate situated in Denbo, Centerville Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. This Property is listed in Deed book 336, Page 37. This farm in Denbo had 100 acres, one, 2 story dwelling, a barn and other out buildings. The farm was valued at $4,000.

Notes

  He served in the US Army, and participated in the Berlin Air Lift. Enlisted in the service of 1948 and got out in November 1950. Spent boot camp in Breakinridge, Kentucky. Went to Germany in November 1948. Everything was bombed and non

existing.

  He is now a small engine Mechanic. Created his own lawnmower business in 1963 and is still operating.

  43.  Donald7 Ward  (John Thomas Ward6 Sr, Austin Robinson Ward5, Robert T.4 Ward, Thomas3, Stephen2, James1) was born August 21, 1933 in Luzern Twp. Pennsylvania.  He married Patricia Hough.

 

Notes

  He was in the US Army and was sent to Korea. He spent 48 days fighting at Heartbreak Ridge and he also landed at Inchon. When he was 15 years old, the Brooklyn Dodgers came and wanted him to play ball for them. His father would not let him. Patty stated that when he played softball, teams would call her and wanted her to talk him into playing ball for their team.

  His life’s work is that of a steelworker (Hunky Steel Worker). One talent he has is that of a gardener. His thumb is definitely Green.

  44.  John Ward7 Jr., Ph.D.  (John Thomas Ward6 Sr, Austin Robinson Ward5, Robert T.4 Ward, Thomas3, Stephen2, James1) was born August 21, 1935 in Luzern Twp., Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  He married Loysann Crump June 11, 1958 in Cumberland, Maryland, daughter of John Sr. and Kathleen Humphries.

 

Notes

  He is a veteran of the US Army and was drafted. This was done on April 25, 1956. His induction was postponed on May 14, 1958. It was postponed until fist call after the completion of his teaching schedule. He left for the Army on June 16, 1958. In

September he went to Fort Caffee Ark. for an 8 week course in administration. After this school he was sent to the 249th General Hospital that was attached to Fitzsimons Army Hospital. He was hired as a teacher on 4 September 1957. He became an Elementary school principal at Gill Hall school in 1965.

  His education is as follows; BS '57 California University, M.Ed. ‘64 Duquesne University, and a Ph.D. '75 from the University of Pittsburgh.

  Donna has a BA degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She is now a nurse at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. At the time she was married, she was a nursing instructor. She filled her application for a marriage license at 3:24 PM on July 29, 1886. The license was issued August 1, 1986.
