He was Scots-Irish, of the Ross clan. He operated a store in Philadelphia before coming to Washington County in 1783. The tract of land was known as "Chesnut", not having a "t" in the 18th century. He is buried at Buffalo cemetary, as are his son, his grandson, his great grandson, his great-great grandson, his great-great-great grandson, and his great-great-great-great grandson. His great-great-great-great-great grandson, my father lives on part of the original land grant, at the corner of Taggart and Wotring Roads in Washington County.
