The land where Washington Co. now resides was not under the jurisdiction
of the proprietary Penn goverment until 1768 when a treaty was made with
the Indians. However, Virginia also laid claim to the area and in December 1774
organized their "District of West Augusta". They set up three counties:
Ohio, Monongalia, and Yohogania. I can't locate a map showing the
boundries of those counties (my files are a mess), but I'm sure you could
obtain one from the reference librarian at Citizens Library in Washington.

Briefly, though, Ohio county contained Donegal and Hopewell townships (in their original
boundries), Monongalia county contained Amwell and Bethlehem townships, and Yohogania
county contained the rest of 1781 Washington county. In 1785 when the western boundry
of Pennsylvania was finally fixed, Yohogania Co. was absorbed by Ohio county and ended
up being in Virginia (now West Virginia).
