Tess, that really is a tough one. One approach would be to research
one of his siblings, since they might have left a better trail of
records or had a more unique name like "Absolom" or somesuch. Do you
know if he had siblings or who they might have been? Or perhaps
there were others in the communitiy where he settled that were from
the same location in Penna. Groups of people often migrated together.
Also, if he lived into the 1870's or beyond, perhaps there was
an obituary when he died. Many small towns did have newspapers,
and those are usually housed at local libraries. An obit might
give clues to sibling's names, etc.
Did he or any of his children appear in any local biographical histories
during his lifetime? Works like "Beers Biographical History of
Washington Co." were all the rage all over the country. You could
check with your local LDS library (see our "Libraries" page under
the "Resources" section from the front page). This is where I got
many clues about where my ancestors were from and where they went
after they left the county.
Those are a few ideas. It sounds like the search is on! Good luck.
