Roots Surname List - Maintained by the RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative. The Roots Surname List (RSL) is a list of surnames (over 207,972 in March 1997, submitted by over 25,441 Internet genealogists) with associated dates and locations.

soc.genealogy.surnames (aka GENAM-L) Archive - The soc.surnames.genealogy (aka GENNAM-L) Archive is a collection of postings made to the soc.genealogy.surnames newsgroup since late 1994. By November 1996, they had had 43,500 submissions.

ROOTS-L Archive - The ROOTS-L Archive is a collection of E-Mail messages that have been sent to the ROOTS-L electronic mailing list since late 1987.

GENDEX - Worldwide Web Genealogical Index - This huge name index is maintained by an individual, Gene Stark. As of March 1998 there were over 5.2 million individuals and 2.1 million surnames. Individuals who keep their genealogy on their home computers can use Gene's software to index their GEDCOM databases and the submit that index to Gene to become part of GENDEX.

JewishGen Family Finder - Maintained by the JewishGen organization and is now searchable via the Web. Created in 1982, this is a database of towns and surnames currently being researched by Jewish genealogists worldwide. As of April 1997, over 3500 people had made 17,000 ancestral surname submissions and 6,500 town name submissions.
