We Received PAGenWeb's
Outstanding County Award for August!
Since July 1996 we have been on-line, representing Washington
County, Pennsylvania in the USGenWeb project. And over the last four years
we have changed and grown, hopefully into a more useful destination for
genealogy web-surfers. This month we have been honored by the Pennsylvania
section of USGenWeb, PAGenWeb, with
the Outstanding County Award for the month of August. Many thanks to
PAGenWeb, and many, many thanks to all those who have contributed materials and
efforts to making www.chartiers.com the
best it can be.
We Revamped Our Site Again!
Once again, we have given our site a coat of fresh paint.
That is to say that we've revamped things to make it easier for you to get
access to the information you want. It will also make it easier for us to
incorporate the suggestions and new materials that folks frequently send our
way. Even though we think we've worked out all the glitches, it may take
up to two months to uncover them all. If you stumble across a problem, let
us know.

We are honored to provide archival space for back issues of the Jefferson

WV Genealogical Conference to be held
CONFERENCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!!! The WV Genealogical Conference,
slated for Oct 29, 30, 1999 in Wheeling, has been cancelled.
On August 29th, our site was awarded the
Pennsylvania Destination of the Day
award. We are so pleased!

Dr. Raymond Martin Bell
Raymond Martin Bell, 92, of Coralville, Iowa, died Monday, April 12, 1999, in University of Iowa Hospitals and
Clinics, following complications from a stroke on Saturday.
Dr. Bell was born March 21, 1907, in Weatherly, a son of the Rev. Frank and Marion Estelle Seibert Thompson.
He received his A.B. degree in 1928 at Dickinson College in Carlisle and his doctorate in physics from
Pennsylvania State University in 1937.
From 1937 until 1975, Dr. Bell was a professor of physics at Washington and Jefferson College.
He was a fellow of the American Society of Genealogists and historian emeritus with the Western Pennsylvania
United Methodist Conference.
Dr. Bell was a longtime contributor to local history and genealogy through his research and writing, and he was
honored with a Life Membership in the Genealogical Society of Southwestern Pennsylvania in Washington.
On March 28, 1942, in Wilmore, he married Lillian Mae Kelly, who survives.
In 1995, he and his wife moved to Coralville and became members of Coralville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Edward F. Bell of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters, Carol B. Macomber of Prairie Village,
Kan., and Martha B. Butler of Elkton, Va.; five grandchildren, Kelly, Jeffrey, Adam, Lauren and Justin; and three
great-grandchildren.

WGPS 25th Anniversary Conference
The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society sponsoring their 25th Anniversary Conference Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26, 1999 at The Station Square Sheraton, Pittsburgh.
The keynote speaker, Henry Z. Jones, is author of Psychic Roots and
The Palatine Families of New York - 1710.
Mr. Jones will open the conference with a general session and will be featured during several other sessions during the two-day conference. The additional
twenty-plus sessions will include a choice of speakers, covering general
genealogical and specific western Pennsylvania topics.
Induction of Charter members of First Families of Western Pennsylvania will be at the Friday night banquet on the riverboat, Liberty Belle. Take a three-hour cruise down the river, hear Hank Jones speak and salute our new lineage society.
Detailed information on the schedule, costs and registration will be available in January-February 1999.
The Genealogical Society of Southwestern Pennsylvania is now on line, with information about their 1999 program plus more.
The Jefferson College Historical Society of Canonsburg, PA are on-line with
a web page!
The Jefferson College Historical Society is a nonprofit educational
organization dedicated to advancing knowledge, understanding, and
appreciation of local history.
Members receive the Times by mail at least four times yearly. Articles
of local historical interest are
earnestly solicited.

Announcing The Grand Opening of the A. D . White Research Society Ltd.
Saturday, September 12, 1998, (10:00 AM to 5:00 PM) held at the Hilcrest Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Main and Church Streets, in Burgettstown, Pa. A Genealogical Fair will be held at the church, due to the limited space at the A.D.White Center. The Center itself is located at 130 Center Avenue, Burgettstown, Pa.
All are welcome to participate in the Fair and are urged to bring family group sheets or other genealogical materials. An "Eat all you want" Salad Luncheon, including rolls, coffee, cold drinks, and dessert, will be available in the church basement for a five dollar fee. Please make Reservations if planning to eat. You may do so by sending a $5.00 per person check, the number in your party, and your name to Bernice Phillis at: Mrs. Harry Phillis, 630 Phillis Road, Burgettstown, PA 15021.
There will be a short dedication service held in the church sanctuary at 2:00 PM, after which tours of the Center will be conducted for anyone wishing to view the facilities.
A.D.White, who died in 1994, was an avid collector of local
genealogy, including family histories, obituaries, tombstone inscriptions, and various other genealogical and historical information. It was Mr. White's wish that this material be made available to the public, and before Mr. White's death,
the late Max Grossman copied over 130,000 pages of this material for the
public's use. K.T.H. McFarland resident genealogist and archivist, is organizing this material.
If you'd like to contribute your genealogical or historical collection to the A.D. White Center, your donation of this material would be welcomed. Any
monetary donations would be welcomed also.
The Historic Towns of
Washington County series has been recently published and are available
for sale. Three volumes are available. [Aug 1998]
In May 1998, after nearly two years of operation, the Washington Co. Genealogy
web site has been revamped. In addition to our new look, we have made some
very serious modifications behind the scenes that are designed to make this site
more usable. We hope you enjoy the changes!
On April 1, 1998 the Computer Interest Group was formed in Washington Co.,
PA. Meetings are open to the public. The new group focuses on
software available for managing personal genealogical research. The last
meeting was held at Citizen's library, and the next
meeting is tentatively scheduled for August.
