My GGGGrandfather William Kerr married a Margaret Jane Miller and they owned property in Hanover Township, during the late 1700's. William and Margaret Jane left in approximately 1811 - 1813 and moved to Ohio. We are a bit confused as to exactly where our ancestors lived in Pennsylvania as we understand that at one time or another certain parcels of land in this area were in Smith Township, Washington County, Moon Township in Allegheny County, Hanover Township in Washington County and Hanover Township in Beaver County. We do have the following information regarding the location: Washington Co., Pa. Land Record: Jan. 25, 1794, John Kerr (signed Carr) bought 40 acres from Samuel Moore and wife Elizabeth for 30 lbs. This land is on the north side of a land patent Samuel Moore got from the State of Pa. in 1790. John's land lies on waters of Kings Creek by land of Seve Stepens and Andrew Johnston. Washington Co. Pa. Land record, Book 1-5, Page 9.756: Samuel Moore deceased of Hanover Twp., Washington Co., Pa., did during his lifetime obtain a patent from the land office of the Pa. State on Sept. 15, 1790, listed in the master of Rolls office in Patent Book No. 16, Page 401, and the said Samuel Moore and Elizabeth Moore his wife sold to John Kerr on Jan. 5, 1794, 40 acres & 142 perches situate & lying on the north side of the tract of land for which the above mentioned patent was granted, it being part of the same, recorded in Book I, Page 889 and 890 on March 28, 1794, in Washington Co. Now, John Kerr and Elizabeth Kerr his wife sold to Joseph Menezenger for $207 the above mentioned 40 acres & 42 perches, but by actual measurement being 41 acres & 81 perches lying & being situate on the waters of Kings Creek viz: Beginning at a post, thence by land of the said Joseph Menezinger north 56 degrees west 106 perches to a post, west 22 perches to a noe, thence by land of the heirs of Samuel Moore dec'd, south 45 degrees west 36 perches to a post, south 56 degrees east 164 perches to a post, thence by land of Thomas Cooker north two degrees west 58 perches to the beginning. Signed John Carr and Elizabeth Carr (her mark) on March 18, 1807, in Beaver County, Pa. Witnesses: John H. Redick, associate judge of Beaver County Court, and David Redick. Recorded July 30, 1807, by Issac Kerr, Washington Co., Pa. Land listed as still in Hanover Twp., Washington Co. (Note: John and Elizabeth were in Beaver Co., PA). May 5, 1806, William Kerr of Washington Co., PA, bought 50 acres on the southwest end of a tract of land called China Fituate, in Hanover Twp. [is there a map of the location: China Fituate], for $275 from John Moore, and his wife Jane, of Washington Co., PA. Witnesses: James Kerr and David Potts. (John Moore had bought 175 acres of a tract of land called China Fituate, adjacent to land of Samuel Moore, dec., Josiah Stepens and William Foreseth, on Dec. 11, 1797, from the State of PA). Note that this information does not tell us in which county this Hanover Township is located, Washington or Beaver County. We also note the following information: A James Kerr, singleman (perhaps Williams Brother?) shows up in the 1805-06 tax list in Hanover Twp. He probably had turned 21. Also a John Kerr, Jr., (another of Williams brothers?) shows up in the 1805-06 tax list with 1 horse, 1 cow and no land. He's also there in 1806-07 and 1807-08. No other Kerr's listed in Hanover Twp. from 1786 to 1809. We also found the following: Early Settlers Among the early settlers in Hanover Township, but of whom but little is known, are the following: James Simpson received a warrant for a tract of land lying on the waters of King Creek, dated Feb. 18, 1785, surveyed as "Middle Brook" Jan.18, 1786, adjoining Samuel Moore, Hugh Miller, and John Lee Webster. Samuel Clark owned four hundred acres where his descendants still reside. John Comley owned one hundred acres, and had a horse-mill where Thomas Hunter now lives on Harmon's Creek. He left several children. The mill was in use as late as 1820, and the site is now occupied by a steam grist-mill. Hugh Miller, in 1786, owned a large tract of land adjoining the lands of James Simpson. Later his son John owned two hundred acres. John Kirby had a warrant for a tract of land dated Jan. 15, 1785, surveyed December 14th the same year as "Slave Gallant," and contained four hundred and thirty-one acres. Settlements.—In the assessment-roll of Hanover township for 1800 are found the following names of residents of the township, with their occupations at that time, viz., John Buchanan and John Dornan, merchants; John Gillillan and Robert Leeper, tanners; Samuel Glasgow, justice of the peace; John Irwin, James Nelson, John H.Redick, Millers; Jonathan Potts, Daniel McConnell, and William Kerr, blacksmiths. William Carruthers was licensed to keep tavern in the township in 1796, and he kept until 1812. In 1813 the same house was kept by Jane Carruthers. One of the oldest grist-mills was the White Mill, mentioned in 1789 as a point in the boundary line of Beaver, Washington, and Allegheny Counties. This is now Murdochville, in the northeast corner of the township. As one will note, the information seems to run together and it is difficult to conclude where in the township William Kerr the Blacksmith resided. We do have independent information to the effect that William Kerr was a Blacksmith.

The Commemorative Biography Records of Washington Co. PA 1893 Parts I & II, pg. 229, provides some questionable information of Robert and family. It list Samuel STEWART and Elizabeth McCARTY as parents; and his six siblings who lived to maturity were Charles, George, John, Robert, Sarah and Mary. But a family history by William Patterson WILSON (decendant of Margaret Ann STEWART) a newspaperman and historian of Independence, PA , states Robert's father name was John - not Samuel.

They are said to have been married already, although they had no children at that time. They reportedly came in through Ellis Island. They had five children after arriving in the US -Tony (Anthony, Antonio, Antony?) PORRECA (no other data known; said to have died bef 1950, prob. in PA) Philomena PORRECA Shanter (born in Newark, Essex County, NJ; died in Ohio in 1955) Lawrence PORRECA (b. 1908 in Newark, Essex County, NJ; died Fredericktown, Washington County, PA) Rosina PORRECA Garza (b. 1910 in Newark, Essex County, NJ; died in Houston, TX) - - This is my wife’s mother. Lena PORRECA Lamatrice (b. 1912 in Newark; died in Florida) Their mother died ca. 1914 (when my wife’s mother was 4) around the age of 32 so she would have been born abt 1882. Joseph moved to Pennsylvania where he remarried, and worked in the coal mines in Washington County, PA. He died ca. 1928 in Fredericktown, Washington County, PA. I am looking for a list of Justices of the Peace in Union Township from 1880 to 1905. My father told me that Thomas Williams, my great grandfather, was a Justice of the Peace. He was married to a Elizabeth Evans Williams and they had 9 Children. Her stepfather or his father was the minister of The Stone Church (James Chapel Methodist Church) in Finleyville. According to statements he made on various Censuses, he was born in Washington county, PA. 1845, married Matilda HOVER (daughter of William "Billy" Hover). Living in Hickory Twp., Mercer Co., PA. By the 1850 Census, they have 3 children. Bible Records show 7 chldren. By the 1860 Census they had 4 surviving children, and had moved to a farm in Auglaize Co., Ohio. 1861 Matilda divorced Ross. She died in 1863. In 1862 Ross married Susanna Helwig. They had 4 children. If anyone can help us find one little boy who was born in Washington County in 1814, we sure would appreciate it :)

They were in southwestern Pennsylvania (Allegheny, Butler, Cumberland,Fayette, Washington, or Westmoreland Counties) at or before 1800. One of their children was, William H. Thompson (my Great Grandfather), b. 4 July 1805 in PA. At about 1850, William H. Thompson migrated from Butler County, PA to southern Ohio. Family oral history says that William H. Thompson came to southern Ohio from Pittsburgh, on a flat boat, via the Ohio River. William H. Thompson married Clarice Wymer on 17 April 1853, in Portsmouth, Ohio. After the war, Zebulon Lee removed to Luzerne Co., PA and married there in 1792 to Margaret Courtwright. We think that he could have had some Lee relatives who remained in Washington Co., PA. Maybe his father remained here. We do not know the name of the father. We think he could have had a brother by the name of Samuel LEE. According to Pension files, Zebulon Lee was born in Lebanon, CT in 1758, and came "as a young child with his father" to Northampton Co., PA. They were there until the family removed to the Monongahela River in about 1781. In 1797, Samuel Lee, who could have been a brother, appears to have followed Zane's Trace into Fairfield Co., Ohio. Zebulon Lee purchased a portion of Samuel Lee's Fairfield Co., Ohio lands for $1.00 and removed to Fairfield Co., Ohio in 1804. Samuel Lee went to the area of Bond County, IL about the time of the war of 1812, where he died in 1833. Zebulon Lee sold his Fairfield Co., Ohio lands in the 1830's and removed to Hancock Co., Ohio, where he died in 1848. We think that the Lee family may have had Washington Co., PA connections. Are looking for any clues that would name a father for Zebulon or Samuel or prove that they are indeed brothers.

Margaret died 3-6-1861 age 76yr8mo24da according to her gravestone. John was born 1772(grave stone says of Washington Co Pa) died 5-17-1832. I was told that her parent was James Wilson and Christiana McCullough, but the dates just don't match up. And according to one other researcher, She isn't in the family at all as she would be in the "sister" range of age instead of "daughter" range. Now back to square one. I have a rather lenghty family history of Martha Wilson's children from another researcher and she was the mother of James Wilson who married Christiana McCullough. Having said all that, my query is the following. At this time, we are specifically trying to find records and information on John Meek and his wife Mary (Coventry) Meek, who are our great great grandparents. We believe they may have been born and lived in Washington County, PA. This is based primarily on review of census data for IL, IN, OH, PA and VA. There are very few references in these states to the Coventry surname, so it made doing a state-by-state crossmatch with the Meek surname relatively easy. The result was that the Meek and Coventry surnames seem to coexist solely in southwestern PA, and most significantly in Washington County. We believe that John Meek and Mary Coventry may have been the children of people living in Washington County in the timeframe of 1800-1820. John and Mary were both born between 1800-1803 according to information we have. The 1810 PA census data shows only one Coventry statewide, and that is John Coventry in Washington Co. There are no Washington Co. Meeks in that data, but there are Meeks in neighboring counties of Greene, Allegheny and Armstrong. The 1820 PA census data shows four Conventry entries, with two being in Washington Co. (i.e. John and William). In that census there are also five Meek references in Washington Co. for George, Isaac, Joseph, Samuel and William. (The 1820 census data again shows the Meek name in neighboring Allegheny and Greene counties.) John and Mary (Coventry) Meek had their first son William born in 1826. At that time we assume they had only recently been married and were in their early twenties. We have found no marriage or birth records yet for any of these people. The next four children they had were born between 1832-1839; the gravestone of their son John born in 1839 (buried in Vandalia, Fayette Co., IL)is inscribed with the words "Born in Ohio." Their last child born, Andrew Meek, was born in 1840 after they arrived in Fayette Co. IL. We hope that someone may be able to help us make a clear link to these ancestors, and perhaps beyond. We do not know if gg grandfather John Meek had any siblings, but we do know that Mary Coventry had at least one sibling, a brother named William. We also have very old photographs of Mary's brother William and their father Coventry (no name). Thank you again.

Thornton Provens. His surname is Provens on BLM records for two land purchases in VA Military District and sale of Chillicothe District lands. An early deed in Gallia County lists him as Thornton Provvens. Another deed lists him as Thornton Provins. I am looking for brothers and sisters of the subject who was my great grandmother. Part of her obituary is pasted below: Mrs George M Couch Mrs Mary Ann Carson Couch, 77, wife of the late George M Couch, died suddenly at 12:00 p. m. Thursday, June 9, 1938, in Oakmont. A daughter of Robert and Jane Bell Carson, she was born April 2, 1862, in Armoy, County Antrim, Ireland. She came to the United Stated in November, 1882. She and George M Couch were united in marriage February 22, 1883, by Dr. J. W. English of the Robinson's Run Church. Mrs. Couch was a resident of McDonald for a number of years, and resided in Cherry Valley before going to Oakmont. She had been a Record-Outlook subscriber for over 40 years. She leaves one sister, Mrs. A. B. Cochran of McDonald. Another sister, Mrs James Querns, died in McDonald, May 22, last. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Couch home, Oakmont, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Mellin, pastor of the Oakmont Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Robinson's Run cemetery, McDonald. From the Robinson Run centennial booklet in the State Library, I learned the wittnesses for the wedding were Henrietta Smith and William B Carson. Was Wm B Carson a brother? I remember in the 1940's and earlier (?) , there was a Carson reunion every summer. I think they were held in Washington County, but I remember going to one at North Park. My memory is that there were over a hundred people, maybe 200 attending. Can anyone help me with these Carsons?

There is a John Farquahr FORKER born about 1787 as a tailor (where is there a list of apprentice for this area or being a single freeman 1809 as a tailor would there be a list in Ireland if this is where he came from?). Samuel Forker born about 1783 with a wife name Amanda and three girls. Samuel Forker dies in 1817. John marries Sybella Jones of Levi Jones by 1818. In Perrine Book it says Patrick Forker of PA and wife Elizabeth with daughter Janet born 1762 and in 1782 she marries William Perrine and son James marries Eliz Witherow of Westmoreland County. Perrine family moves to OHIO. Patrick Forker gone from records 1819. There might be a son Charles in WC 1830 with wife and ELizsabeth?

In 1862 Brownlee was recruiting for the General Jo Shelby of the Confederacy and was captured by Union Forces in Boonville, Cooper Co., MO. He was convicted of spying and sentenced to death. However, he escaped from the Cooper Co. jail. In 1865 when the Civil War was over, he was en route to Springfield, Mo. to surrender when he was again arrested by Union Forces and executed under the earlier sentence by General John B. Sanborn. Charles Brownlee had a widowed mother of unknown name, brothers Robert and Archibald and sisters Sarah and Elizabeth.

They settled in Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Six of their ten children were born in Charleroi; Mary b. 1888, Louise b. 1891, Jules b. 1892, Elmer b. 1894, Josephine b. 1896 and Henrietta b. 1898. I believe they may have settled in Charleroi because they had relatives from Belgium already living there. While searching at the Prothontary Office at the Washington County Court House I found naturalization records for the following Duponts and Leonards: Francois DUPONT n. 1896 from Belgium, Aimer Alexander DUPONT from Belgium, Jean Joseph LEONARD n. 1896 from Belgium. They divorced 1910 in New Castle,PA Lawrence County. Wallace remarried to a Phoebe Sitsinger and Mary remarried 1911 to Thomas Bartberger. Don't know who raised Raymond but he did visit his mother and siblings in New Castle several times, including bringing his wife to meet them. He also gave them photos of himself during one of his visits. They relocated somewhere near Pgh,PA area. We sure would like to know more as to what became of Raymond??? We want to include him and any descendants in our family history. It's hard to believe I have a half-uncle that I never knew. I have wondered if he went into the military with the war going on or what. Rascilles married Mary KRAFT from Somerset Co., PA on Sept. 21, 1868 and migrated to Kansas City, MO where their daughter, Mary Elizabeth LYNE, was born in 1869. From there they came to Ottawa Co., KS by 1875. Their son, James Henry DOWDEN, was born around 1872 in KS. In the 1850 Washington Co., PA census, I found Phoebe DOWDEN, age 36, with children Margaret, age 16, Mary A., age 15, Castner, age 6, Henry, age 11, McCluskey, age 9, Susan E., age 1, and Wesley, age 13 all were born in PA. I found probate records for James DOWDEN, deceased, dated Sept. 25, 1849, from Washington County, PA. Does anyone have any info on Castner? I am wondering if that is the middle name for my Rascilles. He seems to be in Venango County by 1819 taxed as a tailor and married to Sybella Jones , daughter of a Levi Jones It seems that John is related to Patrick and Samuel Farquhar and Forker. Patrick is is Fallowfield Twp 1800-1819 over the age of 45 to be his father and Samuel a few years older is dead by 1817 and married to Amanda. LIST OF APPRENTICES????????? All the above children married in the Stiles family marrying their spouses brother and sisters. All of the above Barnes moved to Guernsey Co. Ohio. I do know that the boundry lines changed and may not have moved the State lines may have moved. I have information on the lines forward and much, much information on the Stiles line.
