Henry C. McFarland, 75, of Washington, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 1997, at his home. Mr. McFarland was a mine supervisor for 23 years for Gateway Coal Co. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for 34 years, was Sunday School superintendent, president of the senior choir and chairman of the deacon board. Mr. McFarland served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He participated in Rome Arno, Northern Appennines and Po Valley, Italy, campaigns. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantry Badge. In June, 1957, he married Jessie Whatley McFarland, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Ruth Tinsley of Ft. Washington, Md., Theresa Robinson of Birmingham, Ala. and Yoland D. Spikener of Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Betty McGee and Sadie Austin, both of Bessemer, Ala.; and three grandchildren, Malik Spikener and Lanique and Monique Robinson. Deceased are a brother, Alfred McFarland; and a sister, Ethel Johnson. There will be no public visitation. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. He was born March 20, 1922, in West Blocton, Ala., son of Henry and Velma Hardy McFarland.
