William G. Stewart, 90, retired chief executive officer of Cyclops Corp., died Thursday, April 16, 1998, in the Medical Center at Friendship Village. He was a graduate of East Washington High School and graduated in 1929 from Washington and Jefferson College, where he was later awarded an honorary doctorate. He was member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Mr. Stewart joined Universal Cyclops Steel Corp. in 1929 and served as assistant treasurer and vice president before being named president in 1955. He was named to the newly created position of chairman of the board in 1972 and continued as the company's CEO. After his retirement from Cyclops in 1973, he was involved in coal, oil and gas development. Mr. Stewart was involved in a number of charitable projects in Washington County. He was a member of the executive committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute and served on the board of trustees of W&J College in the 1950s. He established the Walter Hudson Baker Scholarship Fund at W&J. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church, Washington; the St. Clair, Laurel Valley, Card Sound and Rolling Rock country clubs and the Duquesne Club. He was a longtime winter resident of the Ocean Reef Club in North Key Largo, Florida. He lived in Washington until moving to Friendship Village in 1987. He was married June 13, 1929, to Katharine Duncan, who died in 1994. Surviving are one son, Dr. William G. Stewart Jr. of Philadelphia; one daughter, Jane Stewart Silbaugh of Beaufort, S.C.; one brother, John L. Stewart of Upper St. Clair, who was also associated with Cyclops; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Harriet Stewart Linn, died in 1967.
