Robert Deter Jr., 72, of Jefferson R.D.1, died unexpectedly at 2:42 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. Mr. Deter was a retired mine mechanic foreman with Gateway Coal Co. and was chief mine electrician. He worked in the coal mines for 47 years. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany and northern France. He was a member of American Legion Post 954 in Jefferson, UMWA Local 6330, Moose Lodge 461, Waynesburg, and an honorary member of American Sheriff's Association. On April 4, 1952, in Mather Christian Church, he married Elda M. Fike, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Roberta Ann Howard and Rebecca Jean Koscheck, both of Jefferson; two sons, Robert E. Deter of Waynesburg R.D.1 and Randall S. "Fred" Deter of Waynesburg R.D.3; five grandchildren, Anthony and Brittany Howard, Megan and Matthew Deter and Felicha Koscheck; four brothers, Charles O. and Albert Deter, both of Jefferson, Gilbert Deter of Tyrone, Okla., and Henry Deter of Standford, Fla.; and a sister, Virginia Kiefer of Canonsburg.
