Elmer I. Ghrist, 87, of Claysville, died Monday, August 24, 1998, in his home, following a brief illness.

He was born November 19, 1910, in Pittsburgh, a son of Howard Elmer and Flora Snyder Ghrist.
Following graduation from Washington and Jefferson College in 1931, Mr. Ghrist pursued doctoral studies at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh.
From 1931 until his retirement in 1973, he was employed by Jessop Steel Co. as general manager of Jessop and its subsidiaries. In this capacity, he was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute and was honored several times by "Who's Who in Scientific America."
Mr. Ghrist was a member of Sunset Masonic Lodge 623 and was active in Claysville community affairs. For many years, he served the McGuffey High School sports program as an announcer at its events, and was instrumental in founding the football program in the school district.
He also served on Claysville School Board and Claysville Borough Council. Mr. Ghrist was an active supporter of Washington County 4-H and various youth organizations.
In 1935, he married Kay Hunt Ghrist, who survives.
Also surviving are a brother, James Ghrist of Washington; two daughters, Carolyn G. McGill of Claysville and Alycia K. Ghrist of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Siobhan Morgan, D'Arcy DeLoach, James Stewart and Amanda Metzger; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Robert Ghrist; and a sister, Evelyn Jamison.
