Retired automobile mechanic and pianist
Charles Edward Melvin, 75, of 72 Mroz Lane, Beaufort, S.C., died Sunday, August 23, 1998, at his residence.

He was born August 13, 1923, in Washington, a son of Harry G. and Gertrude Hogg Melvin.
Mr. Melvin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was an automobile mechanic in Washington until his retirement, when he and his wife moved to Beaufort. Mr. Melvin was an active member of the local community and treasured his retirement years.
During his years in Beaufort, he was self-employed as a window washer and prided himself in making the windows of the old mansions and houses of Beaufort and Fripp Island shine. He was an accomplished pianist in his early years.
His wife, Mary Seibert Melvin, is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Daniel Melvin of Washington and Michael Steven Melvin of Martins Ferry, Ohio; a stepson, Carl Seibert of LaPorte, Ind.; a daughter, Sharon M. Kinney of Salem, W.Va.; a sister, Olive Lyle of Canton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.
