Margaret Virginia Welch McCabe, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, August 2, 1998, in her home. Mrs. Welch was a registered nurse, practicing in hospitals, private duty home care and in industry during World War II. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, where she served as a deacon, elder and as president of the United Presbyterian Women. She was active in PEO Chapter JT, Ladies Literary Club, Modern Reading, Wednesday Book Club, Martha Marquis and Froth. On April 1, 1944, in Gulfport, Miss., she married Dr. Joseph McCabe, who survives and with whom she celebrated 54 years of marriage. In 1958, they moved with their family to Cedar Rapids, when her husband became president of Coe College. Also surviving are a son, Dr. J. Brandt McCabe of Princeton, N.J.; a daughter, Alice McCabe Nowling of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren, Jonathan McCabe and Amanda Kim Conrad.
