Alice Schaffner Foust Lane, 89, of Butler, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in LAS-Passavant, Zelienople.

She was born May 1, 1909, in Butler, a daughter of George M. and Mary B. Quirk Schaffner.
Mrs. Lane attended St. Paul's Parochial School, Butler High School, Butler Business College and Slippery Rock University. He earned a degree in library science.
She was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church of Butler, where she participated in the parish council, Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers and Calvary Cemetery board of directors.
Mrs. Lane had been employed at Allegheny Power, Pennsylvania State Employment Service and W.R. Foust Sheet Metal. She previously had been employed as a Butler County librarian.
She was a member of many associations, including the Butler Women's Club (GFWC); Catholic Daughters of America 443; the BPO Elks 170 auxiliary; Quota Club of Butler, where she served as past district governor and past president; Lending Hands-Butler County Community College Library, where she served as past president; Pennsylvania Library Association; American Lung Association of Western Pennsylvania, where she had been executive vice president; and the Butler chapter of the American Heart Association. She was associated with Catholic Charities, where she was a board member; the Butler Memorial Hospital auxiliary; the Health and Human Service Council of Butler; and the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Lane was twice married. Her first husband, W.R. "Bill" Foust, died in 1932. Her second husband, William C. Lane, died in 1974.
Surviving are a son, Thomas S. Foust of Washington; two grandsons, Thomas S. Foust Jr. of Glenview, Ill., and W. Michael Foust of Troy, Mich.; and two granddaughters, Annie Laurie Ellefson of Mt. Lebanon and M. Carolyn Kinskey of Nashville, Tenn.
Deceased are two sisters, Cresentia Hoover and Grace Helmers; and three brothers, George, Thomas and Roger Schaffner.
