Dr. Fred D. Large, 85, of Claysville, died Friday, December 25, 1998, in Washington County Health Center. He was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Claysville. Dr. Large graduated from Clairton High School and Washington and Jefferson College, Washington. He received his medical degree from Temple University Medical School, Philadelphia, in 1940. Following his internship at Washington Hospital, he entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served in the 79th Infantry Division, European Theater. He was discharged as a lieutenant colonel. Following his military service, he joined the practice of Dr. Harry Hutchison in Claysville. In 1949, he opened his own office as a general practitioner, which he operated until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Large was the mayor of Claysville for the past 27 years. He was honored in 1996 by the community for more than 50 years of dedicated service as a doctor and civic leader. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Washington County Medical Society, Claysville American Legion James R. Hunt Post 639, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VFW Forty and Eighter Club, and the Claysville Masonic Lodge 447, F&AM. He was a life member of the Washington Elks Lodge, Syria Temple AAONMS, Valley of Pittsburgh, and an honorary member of the Claysville Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of more than 60 years, Cora Maye Russell Large of St. Augustine, Fla.; and two nieces, Irma Stokes and Edna Parsons.
