Hugh Harkins Jr., 76, of Union Township, Finleyville, died Tuesday, December 1, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. Mr. Harkins retired in 1971 from U.S. Steel, Gary Works in Gary, Ind., after 30 years. He was then employed by Corning Glass Inc. of Charleroi for several years before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, with the 101st Airborne Division, entering in 1943 and training in the paratroop division. He took part in the invasion of northern France and was missing in action. Of 21 months overseas, 11 were spent in a German prisoner of war camp. Mr. Harkins was a member of Mingo Presbyterian Church, Finleyville; the Improved Order of Red Men 253 and the Arros Haymakers Association 253-1/2, both of New Eagle; American Russian Citizens Club, American Legion Frank Downer Post 302, Sutman Yohe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1409, all of Monongahela, and American Legion Post 613 of Finleyville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving is his wife, Lucille Thomas Harkins, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 27. Also surviving are three sons, James W. and Rick Harkins, both of Hebron, Ind., and John Thomas Harkins of Schererville, Ind.; a sister, Betty Jane Robinson of Gastonville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are three brothers, Donald, James William and John Harkins; and a sister, Beverly Dzubay.
