Stanley J. "Birdie" Potoczny, 84, of Short Street, Bentleyville, died at 8:02 p.m. Monday, February 16, 1998. Mr. Potoczny was retired from Bethlehem Mines Corp., where he worked as a dispatcher at Mine 60, Somerset Township. He was a member of the Ave Maria Parish, Lithuanian Club, Pensioners Club, Eagles Club 1809 and a social member of the American Legion Post 165, all of Bentleyville. He was also the oldest living member of the Bentleyville Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 56 years. Mr. Potoczny was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1197 and the Polish National Alliance, served as a Washington County constable for many years and served as past governor for the former Moose Lodge in Bentleyville. He was the manager of the former Pigeon Creek Vikings Baseball Team and lead them to three championships in 1946, 1947 and 1948. On October 23, 1937, at St. Luke Church in Bentleyville, he married Agatha "Sue" Sheragy, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Stanley Potoczny Jr. of Kernersville, N.C.; a daughter, Karen Sirianni of Bentleyville; five grandchildren, Jim and Shane Sirianni, and Stacy, Stanley and Stephanie Potoczny; two sisters, Nellie Marshalek and Stephanie Stechly, both of Scenery Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
