Andrew Christy Jr., 80, of Carmichaels Street, Rices Landing, died unexpectedly Sunday, February 22, 1998, at home. Mr. Christy was a member of Hewitt Presbyterian Church of Rices Landing, where he was a former deacon and served on the Board of Session. He was a resident of Rices Landing the past 32 years and a 1935 graduate of East Bethlehem Township High School. Mr. Christy retired in 1979 as a miner with J&L Steel Corp.'s Vesta No. 5 Mine, where he was employed for 39 years. He was a member of UMWA Local 762 of Vestaburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He entered in April 24, 1942, and was discharged October 5, 1945. He was wounded in Italy in December 1943, and at Anzio in May 1944, receiving two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, the E.T.O. Medal with six stars, Presidential Citation and Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Christy was a member of Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, Veterans of Foreign War Post of Uniontown and Elks Lodge 7571 of Waynesburg. On June 30, 1966, in Irwin Presbyterian Church, he married Gloria Sharpnack, who survives. Also surviving are a stepson, Richard Nichols of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.; two grandchildren; a sister; Rhoda Pollock of Fredericktown; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are four sisters, Ida Dorsch, Mabel Teasdale, Bertha Carrick and Gladys Christy; and two brothers, Harry and Edward Christy. He was born June 28, 1917, in Millsboro, a son of Andrew Sr. and Mary Jane Parrish Christy.
