Doris T. McCain

Burgettstown native taught school 33 years
Word has been received of the death of Doris T. McCain, 66, of James Street, Applewood Manor, Dallas, who died Tuesday, February 17, 1998, in Wilkes Barre.

Born in Burgettstown, she was a daughter of Helene Ballard Stafford of Dallas and the late C. Warren Tope.
Mrs. McCain was a 1949 graduate of Burgettstown High School; attended Carnegie Institute of Technology for one year; and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. While at Pitt she was a member of Beta Sigma Omicron Sorority.
Before retiring, Mrs. McCain was employed as an elementary school teacher by the Dallas School District from 1965 until 1986. From 1953 until 1960 she was a teacher in the Mt. Lebanon School District. In 1985 she received an award from College Misericordia, Dallas, for "Excellence in Teaching."
She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; the National Education Association; Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; the Dallas Women of Rotary; and the Meadows Nursing Center Auxiliary. She was a Red Cross volunteer; a substitute driver for Meals-On-Wheels; and also took puppies from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) to visit patients in nursing homes.
She and her husband, Henry J. "Jack" McCain, celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on April 8, 1997. Mr. McCain survives.
Also surviving are a son, Marc of Philadelphia; a daughter, Marcy of Houston, Texas; a granddaughter, Allison McCain; two brothers, Charles Tope of Aiken, S.C., and Donald Tope of Stuart, Fla.; a stepbrother, John Stafford of Wheaton, Ill.; three stepsisters, Ruth Duesing of Yalaha, Fla., Helen Holschuh of Hilton Head, S.C., and Marion Springer of Inverness, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were held in Dallas.
