Margaret Mawhinney, 82, of Elburn, Ill., a former 75-year resident of Washington, died Sunday, February 1, 1998, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, Ill. She was united in marriage to Charles H. Mawhinney Jr. on September 10, 1938, in Washington. Mr. Mawhinney is deceased. Mrs. Mawhinney was a 1933 graduate of Beaver High School and a 1934 graduate of the Garfield Business School. She worked as an executive secretary at Washington and Jefferson College and for the Jessop Steel Co., Washington. She served as the executive director of the Western Pennsylvania United Cerebral Palsy Foundation from 1961 until 1965 and also served as a board of director for the LeMoyne House for many years, prior to moving to Illinois. Mrs. Mawhinney also served as an executive secretary for the Honorable Thomas Gladden of Washington County. She was a devout Lutheran who spoke German. Mrs. Mawhinney thought of herself as a progressive thinker and a strong believer of equality. Surviving are a daughter, Jean Mawhinney Yanzer of Aurora, Ill.; a son, Charles Henry Mawhinney III of Littleton, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frederick Trembour of Boulder, Colo., and Max Trembour of Mt. Clemens, Mich. Deceased are two sons, John Ellinger Mawhinney and James Ernest Mawhinney; and a sister, Anne Marie Larimer. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, at First Lutheran Church, Washington, with the Rev. Kenneth Schott officiating. Interment in Washington Cemetery.
