James R. "Bob" Sutherland, 63, of 204 Main Street, West Alexander, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was mayor of West Alexander for the past 18 years. Mr. Sutherland was a retired inspector for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. of Washington, formerly Jessop Steel. He was a member and trustee of West Alexander Presbyterian Church and a graduate of West Alexander High School. Mr. Sutherland was a member of Pennsylvania Mayors Association and a committeeman for the Republican Party. He also was a member of Pennsylvania SAR, IOOF Lodge 94 of Triadelphia and Wheeling Encampment. Surviving are his wife, Roberta Thornton Sutherland; three daughters, Leigh Ann Quinlan of Pennsylvania, Nancy Bentley of Reston, Va., and Dr. Rebecca Sutherland of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, John Sutherland of Nevada; three sisters, Romaine Fischer of West Alexander, Mary Burris of Birmingham, Ala., and Shirley Watier of Orlando, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
