Richard C. Pees, 80, of Michigan Avenue, Washington, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, in the Washington Hospital emergency room. Mr. Pees was a retired farmer and truck driver. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee. He was a member of Chestnut Ridge Grange, Washington Grange, Pomona State Grange and National Grange and was a member of the Washington-Greene County Antique Tractor Association. Mr. Pees was a 1937 graduate of Trinity High School. During World War II, he was with the 28th Division 110th Infantry Regiment in the European Theater, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175, serving on the firing squad. On May 17, 1946, in Independence, he married Gladys Griffith, who died November 10, 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Esther Pees at home; a brother Dwight E. Pees of Washington; three nieces; and two nephews. Deceased are a sister, Gwendlyn M. Stockdale; and a brother, Homer G. Pees.
