Evan S. "Rip" Collins, 73, of Lone Pine, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, in the Washington Hospital. Mr. Collins had attended the Marianna and Highland grade schools and was a 1943 graduate of Trinity High School. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U. S. Navy as a signalman third class. Mr. Collins was a charter member of the Swart-Phillips American Legion Post 897 in Glyde. He was employed for 12 years at the Bethlehem Mines Corporation Mine 58 in Marianna, he later worked for more than 25 years at PennDOT Washington County Maintenance Division as an equipment operator before retiring in 1987. Mr. Collins was also a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Glyde, a 50-year member of the Scenery Hill Lions Club, where he had twice served as president, and was also a Melvin Jones Fellow, a member of the F&AM Lodge 237 in Beallsville, a 32nd degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh, and a member of the Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh, a member of and past president of AFSME Local 2106 of Washington County. He was a former leader of the Glyde 4-H, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in Marianna, and was an officer of the Washington County Poultry Association. On March 8, 1947, he married Betty Johnson Collins who died May 23, 1997. Surviving are three sons, Evan W. "Bill" Collins of Lone Pine, Danny R. Collins of Alaska, and Kevin L. Collins of Houston; two sisters, Louise Pettit of Lone Pine, and Eleanor Kidd of Eldersville; five grandchildren, Janet, Beth Ann, Bonnie, Billy and Evan R. Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
