Dr. Irwin J. Shutsy, 81, of Malden, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at home. Dr. Shutsy was educated at California State College and the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his doctor of education degree. He was an educator for 37 years. For the first five years of his educational career he served in the Washington School District as a teacher in its industrial arts program. He then served as a professor at California University of Pennsylvania in industrial arts from 1948 to 1957 and as director of its student teaching program until his retirement in 1978. For more than 20 years, he was a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, serving as an officer and as president. He also received the honor of Dedicated Californian. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II making 23 Atlantic crossings including invasions at Normandy, Africa and Italy aboard the USS Seatrain Texas. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to Washington-Greene Scottish Rite Club, Ancient Accepted Scotish Rite Valley of Uniontown and Valley of Pittsburgh, Monongahela Valley Caravan No.17 of Syria Temple, Syria Temple AAONMS of Pittsburgh, Brownsville Lodge No. 60 F&AM, and the American Merchant Marine Veterans. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of California. Surviving are his wife, Annabelle Mellinger Shutsy; a son, Dr. Jerry J. Shutsy of Greensburg; a daughter, Bonnie Lee Franko of Webster, N.Y.; a brother, A.J. Shutsy of Rescue, Calif.; two sisters, Eleanor Micholowski of Bay Village, Ohio, and Florence Reynolds of Connellsville; and two grandchildren, Brandy Lynn and Christopher Jay.
