J.P. "Pat" Ely, 87, of Cranberry Township, formerly of White Oak, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at home.

He was born April 2, 1911, in Waynesburg, a son of William P. and Anna Hoge Ely.
Mr. Ely, a retired general superintendant of the National-Duquesne Works of U.S. Steel, was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McKeesport since 1936 and past president of its board of trustees.
He was a past president of the McKeesport Hospital Board of Trustees; a member of the YMCA Board of Trustees; and a former advisory board member of Pennsylvania State University, McKeesport Campus. He was also a member of Aliquippa Lodge 375, F&AM and Syria Temple of the Shrine.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Garrison Ely; a son, John P. Ely II of Mineral Wells, Texas; a daughter, Dr. Sara Jane Stearns of Annapolis, Md.; a sister, Sara Knox of Concord, N.H.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A son, Charles Garrison Ely, is deceased.
Private graveside services will be held Saturday, June 6, in Oakmont Cemetery, Waynesburg, with his son-in-law, the Rev. Jay Stearns officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of McKeesport, Cornell and Versailles, McKeesport, PA 15132.
