Edward M. Zalar Sr., 77, of Carmichaels, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday, March 27, 1998, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident March 1 that also claimed his daughter-in-law, Shirley J. Zalar. Mr. Zalar was a barber in Carmichaels for 50 years and retired from the Crucible Fuel Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Cumberland American Legion Post 400, United Mine Workers of America, SNPJ Lodge of Crucible and the Civil Service of Carmichaels. He was a past president of the Master Barbers Association, served as mayor of Carmichaels for a number of years, and served on the Carmichaels Area School Board. His wife, Gladys Zupancich Zalar, who he married May 2, 1942, died March 13, 1989. Surviving are two sons, Edward M. Zalar Jr. and Jim Zalar, both of Carmichaels; three daughters, Linda A. Krajnak of Carmichaels, Patricia M. Malhiot of Charlotte, N.C. and Jacqueline G. Cheung of Redwood Shores, Calif.; nine grandchildren, James Edward, Robert John and Michael Zalar, Deborah Ann Beatty, Scott and Lindy Krajnak, Emily Gladys and Kevin Eugene Malhiot and Ashley Mei Ling Cheung; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Zalar of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are five brothers, Louis, Albert, Joseph, Frank and Anthony Zalar; and three sisters, Mary Dolinar, Pearl Erjavec and Frances Sudar.
