Former teacher for Charleroi Area schools
Ruth S. Qualk, 88, of Kaukonen Drive, Coal Center (California Borough), died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 1998, in Flo's Personal Care Home, Elco.

She was born November 5, 1909, in Granville, a daughter of Wilbur and Maud Hannen Sutherland.
She was a graduate of Charleroi High School and California Normal School, now California University of Pennsylvania.
For many years, Mrs. Qualk taught school in the Charleroi Area School District.
She was a former member of Coal Center United Methodist Church and a present member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of its XYZ Club.
She was a member of Coal Center United Methodist Women and Fallowfield Grange.
On June 10, 1936, she married Charles A. Qualk, who died December 15, 1996.
Surviving are a son, Clyde Qualk of Coal Center; four grandchildren, James Qualk and Clyde Qualk, Nancy Basile and Patty Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three brothers, Harry, Roy and Playford Sutherland; and two sisters, Louetta Puffinberger and Garnet Sutherland, who died in infancy.
