John W. Shaffer Sr., 85, of Carmichaels R.D.1, died at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at home. Mr. Shaffer was a retired coal miner with Crucible Mine and also worked as a custodian for the welfare office and Baily Insurance Agency, both in Waynesburg. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 4, Local 1980 and the Waynesburg Beagle Club. He enjoyed coon and fox hunting and at one time pitched in the Greene and Fayette County Fast Pitch Softball League. On January 8, 1934, he married Virginia Kathryn, who died February 5, 1961. On May 26, 1969, he married Edna Clark, who survives. Also surviving are six sons, William (Bill), Leroy "Dale," Ronald, Gary and John (Jack) Shaffer, all of Jefferson, and Clyde Shaffer of Waynesburg; a daughter, Janet Cramer of Uniontown; a stepdaughter, Ginny Murphy of Jefferson; 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Shaffer of Elizabeth and Bill Shaffer of Upper Middletown. Deceased are a grandson, John "Smokey" Cramer Jr.; a granddaughter, Michele Shaffer; two brothers, Clyde and George Shaffer; and four sisters, Velma Wilson, Nellie Diehl, Olive Maddox and Mardie Shaffer.
