Mike Smith Sr., 74, of Holly Drive, Washington, died at 7:56 a.m. Thursday, November 26, 1998, in Washington Hospital. Mr. Smith was a member of the Christian Church of North America, Washington, and had been employed for 33 years by Jessop Steel Co., Washington, prior to his retirement. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Northern Solomons and Luzon. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Arrowhead and World War II Victory Medal. On February 10, 1947, he married Julia Lutz Gomez, who died February 16, 1982. Surviving are two sons, Mike Smith Jr. of Washington and the Rev. Daniel R. Lutz of Claysville; six daughters, Julie Ann Straight of New Matamoras, Ohio, Diana Nyswaner of Washington, Barbara Ann Marofka of Washington, Marlene Main of Washington, Debra Walker of Moundsville, W.Va., and Michelle Lutz of Washington; three stepsons, Manuel and Frank Gomez of Washington and Jose Gomez of Claysville; 25 grandchildren; and14 great-grandchildren. Born March 7, 1924, in Renton, he was a son of Stela Porenska Smith of Florida, and the late Daniel Smith.
