Mary Anderson Whitfield, 97, of Springdale, Allegheny County, formerly of Lock Four, died Friday, November 20, 1998, at home. She had been ill for eight months. She was a member of Springdale United Presbyterian Church, Monongahela, the Eastern Star and Lower Valley Senior Citizens. Mrs. Whitfield was a 1921 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania. with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She was a teacher and principal in the area for 35 years, serving 20 years as principal at Waverly Elementary School in Monongahela. Prior to that, she taught in Monongahela schools for seven years after starting her career as principal at Speers Elementary. She retired from Ringgold School District in 1967. Surviving are a son, George Jay Whitfield of Springdale; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a niece, Lois Anne Anderson Lynn of Monongahela; a grandniece and three grandnephews. Deceased are her husband, Glenn Whitfield; a sister, Anna; and two brothers, George Washington Anderson and Charles Jay Anderson. She was born October 9, 1901, in Vestaburg, a daughter of William and Mary Ann Carrick Anderson. She had maintained the family homestead on Sixth Street in Lock Four for many years with her sister, Anna Carrick Anderson, until Anna's death in 1984.
