H.P. "Newt" Simmons, 77, of Eighty Four, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1998, in his home. Mr. Simmons, a self-employed mechanic, was the owner of H.P. Simmons Garage in Eighty Four. He had lived in the Eighty Four area since 1955 and was a member of Wrights Methodist Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg; and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. He also served with the U.S. Army during World War II. On March 4, 1944, he married Grace I. Leppla, who died May 24, 1993. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Cropp of Greentree; seven sons, Wayne Simmons of Eighty Four, Gary R. Simmons of Pittsford, Vt., Barry D. "Booty" Simmons and Terry W. Simmons, both of Eighty Four, and Jerry C. Simmons, Timmy A. Simmons and Jimmy B. Simmons, all of Venetia; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
