Dentist and civic leader
Dr. Ernest P. DeHaas II, 78, of Uniontown, died Sunday, November 8, 1998, in Cherry Tree Nursing Center, Uniontown.

He was born January 7, 1920, in Smithfield, a son of Dr. Ernest P. DeHaas and Sarah Preece DeHaas.
He was raised in New Salem, where his father practiced dentistry. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1937, from Washington and Jefferson College in 1941 and from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a dental officer from 1944 to January 1946.
Dr. DeHaas practiced dentistry in Carmichaels from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. During those years, he was on the staff of Greene County Memorial Hospital, was the school dentist for Carmichaels Area School District and was an active member of Fayette County Dental Society.
For more than 20 years, Dr. DeHaas served as a member and president of Carmichaels Borough Council and as a member and chairman of Greene County Housing Authority. He was a longtime director of First National Bank of Carmichaels (now Community Bank) and was a director emeritus at the time of his death. He was a member and past president of Rotary Club of Carmichaels.
Dr. DeHaas was an active member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels, where he served as an elder, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher.
He was active in masonic and shrine organizations and was a past master of Fayette Lodge 228 and a 32nd-Degree Mason.
In 1991, he moved to Uniontown and became an active member of Uniontown Area YMCA and Trinity United Presbyterian Church, where he ws a member of the session and was a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Greene County and Uniontown country clubs.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ladonna M. DeHaas; four daughters, Mary Jo Titus of Smyrna, Ga., Kathleen A. Heroux of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barbara Bocchini of Waynesburg and Gretchen L. Love of Mars; three sons, Ernest P. DeHaas III of Uniontown, Richard J. DeHaas of Hopwood and R. Bruce DeHaas of Clarksville; 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Melissa and Megan Titus, Adrienne, Corey, Robert, Kenwyn and Sarah Abigail DeHaas, Julie Waugh, Katie Foster, Christopher Denver, Anthony Bocchini and Joshua Sheets; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Dr. Robert DeHaas of Washington.
Deceased are two sisters, Joanne Rush and Mary Jane Burwell.
