Joseph Furiga, 92, of Tenth Street, Monongahela, formerly of New Eagle, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, in Meade Manor, Monongahela. He was a lifelong resident of New Eagle and was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he had served for many years on its church council. Mr. Furiga served the Borough of New Eagle as mayor for 12 years and as a borough councilman for six years. He was appointed to the board of trustees of the former Monongahela Memorial Hospital in 1964, serving as secretary and as a member of the site committee, which established the location of Monongahela Valley Hospital. He had been a member of the board of trustees of Monongahela Valley Hospital since 1972. His 30-year tenure as trustee and director with the health system earned him the Palione Award for dimensions in board leadership in 1995, when he retired from active membership to become member emeritus. Mr. Furiga retired in 1970 after 44 years of service with Combustion Engineering as general foreman of the machine shop. He was a life member of New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Arroas Haymakers Association No. 258 1/2 and the Order of Redman, both of New Eagle. He was active in the Optimist Club, Boy Scouts of America and the Monongahela Cemetery Board of Incorporators. He was an avid golfer until the age of 86. Surviving are a daughter, Joanne R. Amoroso of Monongahela; a son, Richard Furiga of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucy Niccolai of New Eagle and Ann Dipaola of Monongahela. Deceased are his wife, Edith Cain Furiga, who died April 21, 1997; two brothers, Frank and William Furiga; and six sisters, Martha Reale, Pearl DelVitto, Margaret Appolonia, Emma Coligan, Gina Casciani and Mary Furiga.
