Hughes Woodrow "Max" Baer of Scott Township, formerly of Washington, died October 3, 1998, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, after a brief illness. On June 29, 1941, he married Helen Norma Marisa of Fredericktown, who survives. Their wedding ceremony was performed at Immaculate Conception Church, Washington. As a member of Immaculate Conception, Mr. Baer sang in the choir and did volunteer work. In Scott Township he participated at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church. A member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Workers, he was a brakeman and conductor with Pennsylvania Railroad for 45 years, retiring from the PRR/Conrail System in 1986. Mr. Baer enjoyed transporting elementary school students as a bus driver for Chartiers Valley School District for 10 years and became a member of Pennsylvania State Education Association. Surviving are three sons, Raymond Hughes Baer of Savannah, Ga., Kevin Brian Baer of Woodlands, Texas, and Daryl Mark Baer of West Mifflin; six grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. He was born April 12, 1917, in Greensboro, a son of Harry David and Flora Lee Hughes Baer. The youngest of eight children, he was the last member of his immediate family.
