Jack L. Hathaway Sr., 78, of Carmichaels, died at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 1998, in Uniontown Hospital. Mr. Hathaway was a member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels. He was a 1938 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and attended Waynesburg College. Mr. Hathaway was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, with the 26th Infantry Regiment, Company D, 1st Infantry Division ("Big Red One"). He participated in eight major campaigns in the European Theater, including three amphibious landings at Tunisia in North Africa, Sicily and Omaha Beach at Normandy on D-Day. He received two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars for bravery and eight Bronze Battle Stars. Mr. Hathaway also received three Fouregueres for his participation in the liberation of villages in France and Belgium. He also served as a drill instructor during the Korean War. In his early life, he was employed by R.G. Johnson Co. during the construction of the U.S. Steel Co.'s Robena Mine. He later worked at Buckeye Coal Co., Nemacolin Mine and Ireland Mine in Moundsville, W.Va. He retired from Duquesne Light Co.'s Warwick Mine in 1982. Mr. Hathaway was a member of UMWA Duquesne Light Local 6310, National Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Society of the 1st Division and the Battle of the Bulge Association. He was a former member of Greene Academy of Art in Carmichaels and interested in its preservation. He was involved in family history and the history of the Carmichaels area. He was on the board of directors for Laurel Point Cemetery. On March 25, 1948, he married Claire Barclay Hathaway, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jack L. Hathaway Jr. and Barclay A. Hathaway, both of Carmichaels; two daughters, Bridgett C. Hathaway of Red Lion and Margaret J. Hollick of York; 11 grandchildren; a brother, D. Wood Hathaway of Alameda, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother, William Albert Hathaway.
