Art Jones, 51, of Carmichaels, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, October 2, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. Mr. Jones was a 1965 graduate of Mapletown High School and had resided in Carmichaels since 1970. He was a schoolteacher in Carmichaels Area School District from 1969 to 1972 and also coached football during that time. In 1972, he began working for J&L Steel Corp. at various mines, including Shannopin Mine at Bobtown, where he was assistant superintendent. He later worked as safety director for LTV coal mines, as general superintendent of LTV Nemacolin Mine until 1990 and was last employed by Eighty-Four Mining Co. as a supervisor. Mr. Jones was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church of Carmichaels, Sons of Cumberland American Legion Post 400 of Carmichaels, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge of Waynesburg and Carmichaels Sportsmen's Club. He was a longtime member of the National Rifleman's Association, served as secretary of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 819 of Carmichaels and was bulletin editor for Carmichaels Lions Club. He was a former member of Carmichaels Borough Council and the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company. On June 5, 1971, he married Paula Osborne, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James E. Jones at home; a daughter, Melissa M. Jones at home; a sister, Angela "Candy" Pluto of Hopwood; and several nieces and nephews.
