Fort Pitt Bridge retiree was volunteer fireman
Shirley H. Coen, 86, of Canonsburg, died at 8:22 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born August 21, 1912, in Smithfield, W.Va., a son of James and Viola Satterfield Coen.
He resided in the Canonsburg area for 60 years and was Protestant.
Mr. Coen was a fitter for Fort Pitt Bridge Works, Canonsburg, for 35 years and was a retired member of United Steelworkers of America.
He was a life member of Peters Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Coen enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and quiltmaking. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
On August 15, 1937, he married Virginia Berdine, who died August 24, 1996.
Surviving are a son, Bruce Coen of Washington; two daughters, Janice Dufresne of Eighty Four and Carol Jacob of Auburn, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Diana Martin, Darrell Dufresne, Debra Bristor, Donna Dufresne, Rob Jacob, Nicholas Coen and Rhianna Coen; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are nine brothers, Arley, Okey, Burl, Clarence, Guy, Harley, Edward, Kenneth, and Herman "Bill" Coen; and two sisters, Ruby Coen and Essie Goodrich.
He was the last of his immediate family.
