Sherman L. Elder, 78, of East Hallam Avenue, Washington, died Saturday, October 3, 1998, in Washington Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was employed as a coal miner for Pittsburgh Coal Co. for more than 20 years. He later retired from Molyb Corp., now Unocal Corp., after 20 years of employment. Mr. Elder was a 1939 graduate of Hickory High School and an avid hunter and fisherman. On August 29, 1947, he married Dorothy M. Asbury, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Faustina Lee of Blacksburg, Va., and Marla Elder of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Harvey and James Elder, both of Westland; a sister, Edith Jenison of Westland; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Megan Lee; and several nieces and nephews.
