Lawrence R. Churney, 82, of Mill Street, Claysville, died Sunday, October 4, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington.

He was born July 25, 1916, in Waynesburg, a son of Robert and Ella O'Hara Churney.
Mr. Churney was a member of St. Ann's Church, Waynesburg.
He was a graduate of Waynesburg High School, where he held the shotput record in track for more than 40 years.
Mr. Churney was employed as a lineman for Columbia Gas Co. for many years, retiring in the late 1960s.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, one service stripe, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.
On October 26, 1942, he married Mary G. Gilmore, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Loretta Land of New Hampshire; a sister, Mary Eagon of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a brother, Albert Churney.
At the request of the family there will be no public visitation A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, in St. Ann's Church, Waynesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
