Norman W. Sprowls, 84, of East Finley Township, formerly of the Beechview area of Pittsburgh, died at 3:40 p.m. Monday, August 31, 1998, in Horizon Senior Care Center, Canonsburg, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Sprowls had resided in Dravosburg and the Pittsburgh area for more than 43 years prior to moving to East Finley Township in 1996. He was a member of Beechview Presbyterian Church. Mr. Sprowls was a 1931 graduate of Bethel High School and attended Pittsburgh Art Institute. He was a former employee of Carnegie & Illinois Steel Corp. in Dravosburg and was last employed as a mechanical draftsman with Blaw Knox Corp. in Pittsburgh for 29 years, retiring in 1978. Mr. Sprowls was a veteran of World War II, serving as a private first class in the U.S. Army, Company K, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division. While serving in the European Theater of Operations, he was wounded in southern France, receiving a Purple Heart, the bronze arrowhead and other wartime ribbons. On June 27, 1938, he married Alma Lillian Few Sprowls, who died July 23, 1984. Surviving are two sons, Gerald L. Sprowls of Claysville R.D.1 and Edward Alan Sprowls of Beechview; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Deceased are two sisters. Mr. Sprowls was the last of his immediate family.
