Virginia Brockway Welch, 84, of Orbisonia, formerly of Three Springs, died Thursday, September 17, 1998, two months after a stroke.

Born April 15, 1914, in Canonsburg, she was a daughter of Jeanette Baumgardner and George Lawton.
Valedictorian of her Canonsburg High School class, Mrs. Welch later worked as secretary for the Canonsburg High School principal.
She was married to B. "Burt" Welch of Houston, who is deceased, and after World War II and the birth of their children, the family moved to southern Huntingdon County. For several years, she worked as co-director of Three Springs Playground and later was employed for many years as executive secretary for the Rockhill Elementary School principal.
Throughout her life, she actively participated in the United Methodist Church as Sunday school teacher to adults and children, as a Vacation Bible School teacher and as a member of the choir. At Orbisonia Methodist Church, she belonged to the Gleaners class, the Friends of the Library and was recording secretary to the board. Her hobbies were fine sewing, quilting and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are a son, Dan Welch; a daughter, Carolyn Welch Scott; two brothers, Henry and Bill Lawton; and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was in Orbisonia Cemetery.
