Eugene E. Butalla

Retired teacher lettered in football at Waynesburg
Eugene E. Butalla, 66, of 720 North Porter Street, Waynesburg, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, following a brief illness.

He was born December 1, 1931, in Fayette County, a son of Paul and Anna Sato Butalla.
Mr. Butalla spent his early life in Fayette County, lived in Florida for several years and had lived in Greene County since 1978.
He was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Waynesburg.
Mr. Butalla was a 1949 graduate of Masontown High School and was a member of the Waynesburg College Class of 1958. He earned his master's degree from Barry College in Miami, Fla., and continued his education at the University of Miami, Florida State University, Florida International University, all in Florida, and California University of Pennsylvania.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had been stationed in Germany.
He worked for Masontown Borough, Asplundh Tree Co., Chrysler Corp. and Fisher Body. He helped in several building trades.
Mr. Butalla taught high school at Miami Senior High School, and taught and coached at West Greene High School for two years, retiring in 1987. He was a teacher sponsor for several clubs and was a member of several professional teacher organizations.
He was active in sports, having played football, basketball and baseball for Masontown High School and lettering in football all four years at Waynesburg College.
On June 22, 1957, he married Sally V. Seifert, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Susan V. Zeis of Springboro, Ohio, Sharon V. Butalla of Silver Spring, Md., and Stephanie V. Bachmann of Hollywood, Fla.; three granddaughters, Ashlynn and Kaylee Bachmann and Kaitlin Zeis; three sisters, Pauline Gostyla of Clifton, N.J., Justin Franklin of Nashville, Tenn., and Helene Mirikitani of Honolulu, Hawaii; three brothers, Paul E. Butalla of Killen, Ala., Joseph D. Butalla of Carmichaels and Stephen P. Butalla of Rotunda West, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
