Monday, March 1, 1999 Michael Markham Missionary born in Slovan The Rev. Michael Markham, 79, of the state of California, formerly of Slovan, died January 30, 1999, in Moorpark, Calif. He was born August 22, 1919, in Slovan, a son of Nick and Lata Yaksic. He resided in California for the past 55 years. Following service with the U.S. Army from 1941-45, he attended the American Baptist Seminar in Berkeley, Calif., and was ordained a minister in 1953. He pastored many churches in California before establishing Michael Markham Ministries in 1980. From 1980 until his death, he dedicated his life to world outreach and evangelism, preaching and teaching in countries such a Yugoslavia, Korea, the Philippines, Greece, Romania and most recently, Bosnia. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; three daughters, Eileen Kehman of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Laurie Norris of Simi Valley, Calif., and Kathleen Nelson of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Nick Yaksic of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Yaksic Hooge of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Marko, who died in 1943, while serving in World War II, and George Yaksic; and a sister, Sara Yaksic Rozmus. A memorial service was held at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village, Calif., where he was pastor emeritus. Interment was private.
