Edward L. Thompson, 79, formerly of Houston, died Sunday, February 28, 1999, in Canonsburg Hospital, after an extended illness. Mr. Thompson graduated from Canonsburg High School and was vice president/manager of GDC Finance Co. in Canonsburg for 28 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Houston and was a member of Houston Volunteer Fire Department for 55 years. Mr. Thompson was a 50-year member of the F&AM lodge and Jefferson College Historical Society, both in Canonsburg. For many years he was a football and basketball official on the high school and college levels. He was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Washington-Greene County chapter, in 1992. On April 18, 1942, he married Jane Peacock, who died February 22, 1984. Surviving are one daughter, Terri T. Johnson of Upper St. Clair, with whom he made his home; one granddaughter, Laura E. Johnson; and one brother, William M. Thompson of Antioch, Calif. Deceased, in addition to his wife, are two sisters, Sarah Johnston and Dorothy Bennett; and one brother, Charles L. Thompson. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. Interment in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg, will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Houston Volunteer Fire Department, South Main Street, Houston, PA 15342.
