Joseph Wylie Hartzog, 78, of Maple Terrace View, Washington, died at 8:55 a.m. Friday, May 15, 1999, in Washington Hospital. He had been ill since March. Mr. Hartzog spent 16 1/2 years with the U.S. Army, retiring because of an injury. He served during World War II and in Korea. He was a drill sergeant and served in the military police in New Guinea and the Philippines in Mindanao and the Zig Zag Pass and had been with the 24th Infantry Division. Mr. Hartzog was a plumber with Pat Charmley and worked in construction with Charles Hobbs. He was a former member of the Jessop Club, Alpine Club and Arden Club. On April 14, 1954, he married Tomiko Nishimura, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James W. Hartzog of Gordon, Ga.; four daughters, Linda Williams and June Cass, both of Washington, and Linda A. Smith and Wanda J. Howard, both of Macon, Ga.; a brother, Thomas Hartzog of Washington; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Deceased are six brothers, David, James, Russell, John, Robert and Paul; and four sisters, Mary, Pearl, Emmie and Arlane. Joseph Wylie Hartzog
