Albert D. Miller

Retired ironworker was veteran of Iwo Jima

Albert D. "Duke" Miller, 77, of Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, died at 6:10 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2001, following a five-year illness.

He was born in West Alexander, a son of Charles M. and Bertha Fonner Miller.

Mr. Miller was an ironworker for F.M.C. Construction Co. of Fairmont, W.Va., for 40 years until his retirement in 1986.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army on Iwo Jima as a machine gunner. He was a member of American Legion Post 658 of West Alexander and a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Log Pile.

Mr. Miller was Protestant.

He was a member of Washington County Horseshoe Club and enjoyed gardening and pitching horseshoes.

On June 2, 1956, he married Phyllis Jean Letbetter, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Dianna Falvo of Wolfdale, Laurel Penvose of Derry, N.H., and Jeanie Calci of Conway, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Michael Falvo, Ashley and Ryan Penvose, Jessica Calci and Douglas Bullock.

Deceased are two brothers, his twin, Thomas D. Miller, and Charles Elwood Miller; and two sisters, Katherine Harrison and Mary Flaherty.
