Samuel H. Morton

Ordained deacon in La. was WWII veteran

Samuel Hawkins Morton, 80, of Slidell, La., died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Bossier City, La., from heart disease.

He was born in Millsboro, a son of Harry B. and Neonetta Hawkins Morton.

Mr. Morton was a former resident of Minneapolis and Shreveport and New Orleans, La., and a resident of Slidell for 23 years.

He was a graduate of Waynesburg Presbyterian College, Tulane School of Social Work and Donaldson Real Estate School.

Mr. Morton was an ordained deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Slidell.

He was a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and a member of Slidell Lodge 311 F&AM and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5735.

Mr. Morton was a member of Slidell Noon Lions Club and a former member of Teamsters Union in Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Morton; a son, James E. Morton of Waynesburg; four daughters, Betty Sue Allen of Bossier City, La., Diane Robinson of Pennsylvania, Linda Lou Morton-Zelena of Greensburg and Kathryn Vitek of Waynesburg; two sisters, Emily Ann Mark of Millsboro and Elizabeth M. Lohman of Winterville, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in First Lutheran Church, Lake City, Minn., followed by burial with military honors in Oakwood Cemetery in Lake City. Arrangements by Honaker Funeral Home Inc., Slidell and Mahn Funeral Home, Lake City.
